Quick answer

For a first trip to Seoul, stay in Myeongdong: it is central, Myeongdong Station on Line 4 is 2 stops from Seoul Station, and airport buses stop nearby. Pick Hongdae if you want nightlife and a direct AREX train from Incheon Airport, Jongno for palaces, and Gangnam if you are visiting a clinic. On a 3 to 5 day trip, stay in one area instead of switching hotels.

Where to stay in Seoul is the travel question we answer most, and it usually comes down to Myeongdong, Hongdae or Gangnam. This guide is for a first trip of three to five days, as of November 2026. It compares five areas by subway line, airport access and what you plan to do, then tells you which one saves the most time.

Which area of Seoul should I stay in?

Stay where most of your days happen. Seoul is large, and crossing the city twice a day costs more than a slightly higher room rate.

Is Myeongdong the best area for a first trip?

For most first trips, yes. Myeongdong is in the middle of the city, close to Gyeongbokgung, Namsan and Dongdaemun, and airport buses stop in the area. Olive Young stores, street food and money exchanges are a short walk away, so you can drop your shopping at the hotel and go out again.

Our Myeongdong area guide lists hotels, food and clinics within walking distance. For a full sightseeing list, see things to do in Seoul.

Where should I stay for palaces and markets?

Stay in Jongno. Gyeongbokgung, Bukchon Hanok Village, Insadong and Gwangjang Market are close together, and you can walk to the palace early in a rented hanbok before the crowds.

Where should I stay if I am visiting a clinic?

Stay in Gangnam. Most skin and plastic surgery clinics are in Gangnam, Sinsa, Apgujeong and Cheongdam, so you can fit two or three consultations into one day and get back to your room quickly after a procedure. For surgery with a week or more of recovery, a room with a kitchen saves you from eating out while you are swollen.

UH Flat Signature Gangnam is about a 5-minute walk from Exit 1 of Gangnam Station and has rooms with an induction cooktop and washing machine. Our Korean plastic surgery guide explains how many days to plan for each procedure, and the skin clinic guide covers shorter treatments.

Is Hongdae a good place to stay?

Hongdae suits travelers who want nightlife, street performers and independent shops. Hongik University Station is on the AREX airport line, so you can ride straight from Incheon Airport without changing trains. The downside is a longer subway ride to Gangnam. See the Hongdae area guide for hotels and food.

How do I get from Incheon Airport to my hotel?

With light luggage, take the AREX train; with big suitcases, take an airport limousine bus. AREX runs to Seoul Station and Hongik University Station, and limousine bus routes stop in Myeongdong, Gangnam and around COEX. You can buy the bus ticket before you fly.

Taxis and private transfers are compared on our airport transfer page.

Questions people ask

What is the best area to stay in Seoul for first-timers?

Myeongdong. It is central, close to the palaces, Namsan and Dongdaemun, has airport bus stops, and puts shopping and street food within walking distance of your hotel.

Is it better to stay in Myeongdong or Gangnam?

Myeongdong if your trip is sightseeing and shopping. Gangnam if you are visiting a clinic, because most skin and plastic surgery clinics are in Gangnam, Sinsa and Apgujeong.

How do I get from Incheon Airport to Myeongdong?

Take the AREX airport train to Seoul Station and change to Line 4 for 2 stops, or take an airport limousine bus that stops in the Myeongdong area. The bus is easier with big luggage.

Is Hongdae a good place to stay?

Yes, if you like nightlife, street performers and small shops. Hongik University Station is on the AREX line, so you can ride from Incheon Airport without changing. Gangnam is a longer subway ride away.

Should I change hotels during a short trip to Seoul?

On a 3 to 5 day trip, no. One base in a central area costs less time than packing and moving. If you have surgery planned, move to Gangnam for the recovery days.
